Bhindi, 2024 is an ode to a humble vegetable. For me it goes by the name of Bhindi (Hindi), for others Okra. This easy to grow, well-travelled, versatile, disease resistant and nutrient-full vegetable is easily overlooked. Here, it is gilded in gold, elevating the vegetable from its daily and common use to something of reverence and majesty. The work explores the bhindi as a comforting, basic and a sustaining food that is well known to black and brown communities. For me, the sound of oil spitting, and the smell of fresh rice and steaming dhal served alongside shallow fried bhindi is a thought that engages all senses and grounds me deeply.
