Malleable Gridlines, 2024 is a process-based work that revives my joy and connection to identity and land. Using fine metal embroidery thread (zari) and weaving techniques, a familiar formation is created reminiscent of gridlines found in maps and atlases. Traditionally hung flat up against a wall, the weaving considers land that has been flattened through agriculture and colonisation, and shapes it into a malleable sculptural form that curves, moves, reflects light and casts shadow. I imagine what it would look like to pick gridlines off a page, like fabric, and shape it to examine history, culture and communities. This work is adaptable to its surroundings, and can be presented in a number of different forms.
